Soca music is the lifeblood of Trinidad Carnival. And in many respects, Carnival is the lifeblood of soca.

The songs that fill the airwaves at the start of the Carnival season (usually on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas) are written with the revelry of Carnival in mind.

The motive driving the rhythms, lyrics and melodies of most soca songs is often straightforward - tantalize the people into an energized jumping frenzy that will last from dusk till dawn.

Over the years, many soca artistes have come and gone, but the few who have lasted have tapped into that very single minded formula and created insatiable hooks in their songs that will get you moving wherever you are, no matter what time of the year.
